Cal Poly Humboldt Celebrates Homecoming Week by Hosting a Block Party

In celebration of homecoming week Cal Poly Humboldt hosted a free event featuring live music, carnival attractions and food trucks for the community. Crowds of excited guests gathered on the overcast Saturday for the Block Party; the sun came out just in time for the lead performing act the rock band Portugal. The Man.

The festive crowds funneled into the main stage area for the lead rock band performance. Singing along and dancing next to the stage with her two young sons was local Elizabeth Rice, enjoying the upbeat atmosphere at the event.

“It’s great to have events to go to again, it’s been a long time with COVID, this is great,” Rice said.

The free public event was sponsored by Cal Poly Humboldt and coordinated with Forever Humboldt. The Homecoming Block Party was hosted by the university as a way of bringing the community together in celebration of Homecoming week.

“We’re excited to return to a completely live Homecoming that celebrates our new status as a Cal Poly campus,” said Michael G. Moore, associate director of the Gutswurrak Student Activities Center, in an interview published in Humboldt Now.

Bryan Keller and Justina Madrigal came out to see headliner Portugal. The Man.

Cal Poly Humboldt alumni Bryan Keller and Justina Madrigal heard about the free event and were excited to attend the headlining rock concert.

“It’s a free event, we love Portugal. The Man,” Keller said, “we both went here previously, it’s fun to come back. We like what we’ve seen so far definitely.”

“I’m happy to be here and seeing everyone, having fun, smiling and the suns out, “said Madrigal.

The Block Party hosted food trucks along with carnival activities for the participants in addition to the concert. Waiting in line for food at the food trucks was Cal Poly alumni Natalie Alfarro Rivas who had come out to enjoy the lively event with friends.

“This is a really cool event and I’m glad Cal Poly is doing something to give back to its students,” said Alfarro Rivas.

Dancing amongst the crowd was local Savanna Vocke waving colorful flags synchronized with the music in the air while enjoying the live music. Vocke met friends at the event and had heard about the free concert featuring Portugal. The Man through social media.

“It’s been great seeing the community come out again, “said Vocke.  

The Block Party hosted by Cal Poly Humboldt seems a success with the community looking forward to the next exciting public event on campus.
