Beware of Sneaker Waves

Sneaker waves are large waves that can suddenly and without warning surge up a beach, often catching people off guard. They can be dangerous and even deadly.

When visiting any beach you should become familiar with your surroundings. Wave sets can vary within a 30 minute period. Give yourself time to watch the wave patterns before walking along or entering the water.
Always keep your eye on the ocean and the upcoming waves. A wave can double in volume within seconds and can move much faster than you!

  • If you are caught in a sneaker wave, stay calm and try to swim parallel to the shore until you reach safety.
  • If you see someone get pulled in by a sneaker wave call 911
  • Check the National Weather Service Eureka webpage for beach hazard statements regarding sneaker waves.
